“A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.” – John A. Shedd
I’ve thought about this quote a lot, especially when I catch myself choosing the familiar over the calling. You know that feeling, right? When your heart whispers there’s something more, but your feet stay planted firmly in what you know?
The Comfort of the Harbor
There’s something deeply appealing about staying put. Our savings account feels secure, our routines feel manageable, our relationships feel predictable. We’ve worked hard to build these safe harbors in our lives—and there’s wisdom in that. But here’s what I’ve learned: the very comfort we work so hard to create can become the cage that keeps us from the adventure God has in mind.
How many times have I said “maybe next year” to something that stirred my heart? How often have I chosen the path of least resistance when God was clearly pointing toward deeper waters?
The truth is, we weren’t designed for permanent docking. Like those ships in the quote, we were built by a Master Builder who had open seas in mind—not endless harbor time.
When Jesus Says “Come”
You probably know the story from Matthew 14. Peter’s in the boat, afraid of the storm but reasonably safe, when Jesus shows up walking on water. And then comes that simple, life-changing invitation: “Come.”
I think Peter’s heart was probably racing just as much as yours and mine do when God calls us out of our comfort zones. The difference wasn’t that Peter was braver—it was that he heard the voice of the One he trusted and stepped out.
That’s the secret sauce we’re all looking for, isn’t it? Not perfect faith, just faith.
What Leaving the Harbor Actually Looks Like
Let me get practical for a minute, because I know this can all sound very inspiring and completely overwhelming at the same time.
Start Where You Are
I’m not talking about selling everything and moving to another continent (though maybe that’s your calling). I’m talking about taking that first small step toward the dream that won’t leave you alone. Maybe it’s finally having that conversation you’ve been avoiding, or saying yes to that opportunity that both excites and terrifies you.
Ask for Courage, Not Just Clarity
Here’s something I’ve learned the hard way: waiting for complete clarity is often just fear dressed up as wisdom. Instead of praying for God to show you the entire roadmap, try asking Him for courage to take the next step. Clarity often comes in the walking, not in the waiting.
Use Harbor Time Wisely
Of course, not every season is a “set sail” season, and that’s helpful. Sometimes we’re in the harbor for repairs, refueling, or preparation. The key is knowing the difference between necessary preparation and comfortable procrastination (I’m an expert procrastinator. Ugh!)
A Personal Note
These posts are as much for me as they are for you – no doubt more so in many cases. I serve a God who has never once called His people to a life of playing it safe. From Abraham leaving everything he knew to Esther risking her life for her people, the pages of Scripture are filled with ordinary folks who chose faith over fear.
And you and I? We’re part of that same story.
The God who designed you didn’t wire you for a life of perpetual safety. He created you for purpose, for impact, for the kind of faith-fueled adventure that only makes sense when you’re following Jesus.
One Last Thought
“‘Come,’ he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.” – Matthew 14:29
Whatever harbor you’re sitting in right now—whatever comfort zone is feeling a little too comfortable—remember this: the One calling you into deeper waters is the same One who walked on them. He’s trustworthy. He’s got you. And He’s got plans for your life that are far better than anything you could cook up from the safety of the dock.
So what do you say? Ready to hoist those sails? The water’s calling, and Jesus is already out there waiting for you.
