The Question That Changes Everything
A seven-year-old grandson asked his grandfather, “Papa, what if dinosaurs came back?” Before he could answer, his grandson was already building elaborate plans for dinosaur playgrounds and feeding schedules. Kids live in “what if” with wonder, don’t they?
Somewhere along the way, we adults turned “what if” into a weapon of regret instead of a tool of possibility. We whisper it over missed chances and closed doors. But what if—and here’s the beautiful irony—what if we reclaimed this phrase as an invitation to step into God’s bigger story for our lives?
When God Meets Our “What Ifs”
Moses stood barefoot before a burning bush, essentially telling God, “What if this whole rescue-Israel thing doesn’t work out?” (Exodus 4:1). Gideon, hiding in a winepress, asked, “What if I’m too weak and my family’s too small?” (Judges 6:15). Even Mary, receiving the most extraordinary news in human history, asked, “How will this be?” (Luke 1:34).
Here’s what moves me about these stories: God didn’t dismiss their questions. He met them right there in their uncertainty and turned their “what ifs” into testimonies of His faithfulness. Moses led a nation to freedom. Gideon defeated armies. Mary became the mother of our Savior.
Their questions weren’t obstacles to God’s plan—they were the starting point.
The “What Ifs” That Keep Us Up at Night
Maybe you’ve been wrestling with some of these:
In your relationships: What if I had that hard conversation with my spouse? What if I forgave the person who wounded me? What if I stopped hiding behind my phone and really showed up for my kids?
In your calling: What if I finally started that ministry I’ve been praying about for years? What if I took my business idea seriously? What if I stopped making excuses and pursued that degree?
In your faith: What if I trusted God with my money instead of white-knuckling my budget? What if I actually believed He has good plans for my future? What if I started living like His promises are true?
In your daily life: What if I took care of my health like it matters? What if I gave myself the same grace I extend to others? What if I stopped chasing comfort and started chasing purpose?
Each question is a doorway. Each one is God’s gentle invitation to trade “someday” for today.
From Question to Action
Here’s what I’ve learned after decades in ministry: faith isn’t the absence of “what if” questions—it’s what we do with them.
Start with prayer. Bring your “what if” to God honestly. He’s big enough to handle your doubts, fears, and wild dreams. Tell Him what scares you about stepping forward.
Choose one small step. You don’t need a master plan. Moses just picked up his staff. Gideon gathered 300 men. Mary said yes. What’s your “staff” moment?
Move before you’re ready. Perfect conditions are a myth. God specializes in working through imperfect people in imperfect circumstances. (Ask me how I know)
Your Turn
Here’s my challenge: pick the “what if” that makes your heart beat faster—the one that excites and terrifies you in equal measure. Write it down. Pray over it. Then take one concrete step this week, even if it’s tiny.
Maybe it’s sending that text. Making that call. Opening that savings account. Having that conversation. Signing up for that class.
God has already promised He can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine. What if you believed that? What if you acted on it—today?
