An Exceptionally Average Life
Let’s be honest—no one grows up hoping to be called average. It feels like an insult. The word carries baggage… like it’s a synonym for mediocrity or lack of ambition.
But – hear me out – what if average doesn’t have to be an enemy?
In fact, what if there’s something quietly beautiful—maybe even exceptional—about an “average” life that’s lived well, with purpose, faith, and steady love?
Let’s call it, Exceptionally Average.
Not flashy. Not headline-making. Just faithful. Perhaps what was meant by Micah in 6:8, “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”
So what does an “Exceptionally Average” life look like?
Marriage
Not perfect. But real. A safe harbor. Laughter over dinner, late-night talks, forgiveness on repeat. Trust. Faithfulness. Friendship that grows deeper with time. That’s not average—it’s exceptional in a world that’s forgotten covenant love.
Career
You may not be CEO of a Fortune 500, but you work with integrity. Your paycheck is enough, or so you make it. You’re respected, productive, and your contribution makes a difference. You sleep well at night and feel good about how you spend your days. That’s Exceptionally Average.
Health
You may not compete in triathlons or have six-pack abs, but you’re striving to take care of the body God gave you. You move most days, eat with intention most days, and do your best to prioritize sleep and stress management. You’re not obsessed with perfection, but you’re stewarding your health so you can show up well for the people and purposes that matter most. That’s Exceptionally Average.
Finances
You’ve stopped chasing get-rich-quick dreams and learned not to obsess about hoarding treasure on earth. You’re living within your means, giving generously, saving faithfully, and trusting God with your future. You’ve learned to say “no” when it counts, and you’ve found peace in simplicity. Probably no private jet, but no sleepless nights over insurmountable debt either. Exceptionally Average finances looks like contentment in all seasons—and that’s a rich life indeed.
Family
You don’t have a picture-perfect family—and honestly, you’ve stopped trying to fake one. There are messes, misunderstandings, and more than a few awkward group texts. But there’s also laughter, forgiveness, and real effort to stay connected. You eat together when you can. You show up for each other’s milestones. You apologize when you get it wrong (because you do). There are no perfect parents or flawless kids—just people who love each other and keep trying. Exceptionally Average family life isn’t filtered for social media. It’s full of grace, grit, and the kind of connection that grows stronger through the ups and downs.
Faith
You’re not famous. But you’re faithful. You pray. You serve. You give. You’re part of a church family that knows your name. You read your Bible, wrestle with questions, and trust God when life gets hard. You don’t need a platform to live on purpose.
Friend, that’s not settling. That’s sowing. That’s showing up.
It’s living a life rooted in the quiet, steady rhythms of grace. And in a culture addicted to the highlight reel, a faithful, well-lived life stands out.
It’s exceptional.
So let’s stop apologizing for “average” and start celebrating the beauty of a life lived with purpose, peace, and perseverance.
Because few reach the elite by definition. After all, the top 1% consists of…well, the top 1%.
But anyone can pursue and enjoy an Exceptionally Average life. It just requires a little extra, or Lagniappe as this post discusses.
