Life Is Short… Or Is It?

⏱️ The Strange Illusion of Time

“Son, it goes by fast… so enjoy it.”

My dad said that often. And now, at 55, I can see it.

It really does feel like just yesterday that I was in high school.
Or standing at the altar. Or holding our first child.

But here’s the math that doesn’t lie:

  • High school was 37 years ago.
  • Leslie and I married 32 years ago.
  • Our oldest was born 29 years ago.

That’s thousands of days, millions of moments.
So how can it feel like yesterday?

💭 The Gift of Memory

I think it’s this beautiful, baffling thing God gave us called memory.

In an instant, we can time-travel.
A song, a smell, a photo—suddenly we’re there again.
Laughing. Holding. Hoping. Becoming.

But here’s the question I’ve been wrestling with:

If time seems to fly so fast… is life really as short as we say it is?

Or is it just that we’re not paying attention?

📖 A Timeless Reminder

I guess this post could be a follow up to my last, Start and Stop. Psalm 90:12 says it best:

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

This isn’t about fearing how little time we have.
It’s about becoming wise enough to use it well.

Because here’s what I believe:
Life isn’t short. It’s just in motion. Constant motion.

Time never slows down. It doesn’t pause. It doesn’t wait.
So we must choose to live on purpose—or risk letting it all slip quietly by.

⏳ Still Plenty of Time… If I Don’t Waste It

Lord willing, I may have three or four decades left.

That’s 10,000+ mornings.

  • Time to chase a dream I’ve put off.
  • Time to deepen the relationships that matter most.
  • Time to become more of who I’m meant to be.
  • Time to build the legacy I still want to leave behind.

But if I coast… if I drift…
If I keep waiting for some magical “right time,” another 20 years will feel like they vanished in a blink.

And I’ll be left wondering, “What happened?”

🗣️ Let’s Call It What It Is

No more passive days.
No more shrugging off opportunities.
No more “Well, it’s probably too late.”

Bull.
It’s not too late. Not even close.

I have breath in my lungs and purpose in my heart.
So I’ll stop complaining about the pace of time—and start matching it with intention.

Life isn’t short. It’s a full-length story.
It just won’t slow down for us to decide if we’re going to live it.

So let’s live it.

✨ Reflection Questions

  1. Do you find yourself saying, “Where did the time go?” What triggers that feeling?
  2. What dream or goal have you quietly assumed is too late to pursue?
  3. Who do you want to become in the next decade? Or next year? Or TODAY?
  4. What one intentional change could you make today to better match the pace of time with the purpose of your life?

🙏 Final Thought

Time is a gift. But it’s not slow.
It’s a river that won’t pause for the unready.

So don’t just float.

Paddle. Dream. Build. Forgive. Laugh. Begin.
And live every single day—on purpose.
