Starting Where You Are

Embracing Your Current Reality Without Shame

“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” – John 4:29 (NIV)

The “N” of the Vona Process stands for now and next. One of the greatest barriers to moving forward is our struggle to accept our “now”, our current reality—especially when it’s messy, painful, or embarrassing. Yet, true growth begins from where we are, and it starts by embracing where we are right now without shame.

Consider the biblical story of the woman at the well (John 4). Her life was filled with mistakes, regrets, and relational turmoil. When Jesus met her, He didn’t condemn or shame her, as society certainly had—He simply named her reality, inviting her into a new life filled with grace and purpose. Her willingness to admit her current reality opened the door for transformation.

Early in our marriage, Leslie and I faced one of our own “well moments.” Five years in, with our son, Chandler, and Madison on the way, we found ourselves financially overwhelmed, in a mountain of unsecured debt, and living without a plan. The reality of our (MY) financial mistakes was painful and humbling. We had two options: deny our situation and continue in the status quo making things worse, or courageously admit where we were, accept responsibility, and trust God to guide us out.

Thankfully – finally – we chose to embrace reality, as uncomfortable as it was. Using biblical financial wisdom from leaders like Larry Burkett and Dave Ramsey, we faced our mistakes openly, accepted God’s forgiveness, and started applying practical principles of stewardship and discipline. Rather than shame, we discovered grace, clarity, and eventually, after a few years of consistent and persistent sacrifice, Ramsey’s coveted “financial peace”.

How to Embrace Your Current Reality Without Shame

  1. Admit the Truth Clearly:
    • Honestly name your reality without excuses or self-condemnation. It’s the first step to freedom.
  2. Accept God’s Grace Fully:
    • Jesus offered the woman at the well grace, not judgment. Receive the same grace. Shame chains us, but grace sets us free.
  3. Seek Practical Wisdom:
    • God’s Word is practical. Seek trusted biblical counsel or mentors who can offer clear steps forward.
  4. Take Action Courageously:
    • True acceptance isn’t passive. Let reality fuel your determination to make meaningful changes one step at a time.

Reflection Questions

  • What current reality in your life have you been avoiding or denying?
  • How might openly admitting your situation help you move forward?
  • Who or what resources could help you move from shame to grace-filled action today?

Final Thought

Your starting point—no matter how challenging—is exactly where God wants to meet you. Just as He met the woman at the well, God meets us in our mess, offering grace, healing, and transformation. Embrace your reality without shame, and let it become your launching pad to a brighter, more purposeful future.
